If you need a visa for Japan, you must make your application before you travel. Only citizens of around 70 countries can visit visa-free.

Japan eVisa: Application Requirements

The most important eligibility requirements for the Japan eVisa relate to where you live and your passport’s issuing country. You must hold both of the following:

  • Passport from one of around 130 eligible countries
  • Valid residency permit from one of 10 approved nations

Most international travelers need a visa to travel to Japan. If you meet the requirements for an electronic visa, it’s the easiest way to get your entry permit. Check your eligibility for the eVisa before you apply.

If you’re not eligible for the eVisa or visa-exempt travel, you must apply for a visa in person at a Japanese embassy or consulate.

Important: The eVisa for Japan is only for tourism visits. If you’re traveling to work or study, you’ll need a different type of visa.

Documents required for a Japan eVisa

The Japan eVisa application process is 100% online. It involves submitting a digital form and some supporting evidence. Here’s a checklist of documents you need to complete the process:

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity and 2 blank pages
  • Residency permit or visa from an eligible country
  • ID-style photo that shows your face clearly
  • Bank statement or certificate of annual income
  • Proof of your home address
  • Certificate of employment with your position and salary
  • Trip itinerary with flight or ship ticket details
  • Accommodation information in Japan

If you’re applying on behalf of a minor, a birth certificate is also required, along with a copy of a parent’s passport and bank statement.

Traveling with your eVisa to Japan

With your approved eVisa, you’ll be able to stay in Japan from 15 days to 90 days, depending on your nationality.

If you’re visiting Japan with an eVisa, you should carry a copy of all the supporting documents required in your application**.

Other Requirements to Visit Japan

All visitors must fill out a Customs Declaration form, whether traveling with or without a visa. It’s also known as the Japan CD. It only takes a few minutes to complete when using our streamlined form.

When you arrive, border officials might ask to see proof of financial means to cover your trip costs, your accommodation details, or your return travel ticket. Have all of these documents ready to show if requested.
